One rule above the rest Pain is information, not an obstacle to power through. The popular "a bit of pain is fine, keep moving" advice suits stiff, deconditioned, or fear-avoidant backs — but it is not universal. When a nerve is involved, pain that spreads further down the leg or ramps up is a signal you're on the wrong track. A useful tell: symptoms easing or drawing back toward the spine is a good sign; symptoms travelling further out is a cue to back off. If something feels really wrong, it usually is — ease off and get it assessed rather than working through it.
